As the Western alliance held a summit in Warsaw, Poland, Mr Gorbachev criticised Nato’s decision to deploy 4,000 more international troops in Eastern Europe. U.S. Army Gen. Curtis Scaparrotti’s comments are US-Russia game changer By L. Together with Russian military provocations against NATO forces in and around the Baltic, this move seems to validate the observations of Western analysts who argue that under Vladimir Putin, an increasingly aggressive Russia is determined to dominate its neighbors and menace Europe. http://www.latimes.com/opinion/op-ed/la-oe-shifrinson-russia-us-nato-deal–20160530-snap-story.html

Ice-Cold Geopolitics (I) | 2016/03/15 | BERLIN/OSLO/WASHINGTON
(Own report) – A NATO war game, currently taking place in Norway, with the participation of elite units of the German Bundeswehr, includes training the deployment of nuclear arms against Russia. The exercise named “Cold Response” involves the use of B-52 bombers, particularly designed to drop nuclear bombs.

Ice-Cold Geopolitics (II) | 2016/03/17 | BERLIN/MOSCOW/WASHINGTON
(Own report) – The participation of elite units of the German Bundeswehr in NATO’s current “Cold Response” exercise in Norway, is a demonstration of Germany’s growing interest in the Arctic. While the Bundeswehr is training in “winter warfare” skills, the German government, by its own admission, is seeking to make the polar region a “central focus of German policy.”

The Maastricht treaty which was accepted by European Union 1991 included a Common Foreign and Security Policy. In the treaty Western European Union was pointed out as the military dimension of EU. It contained crisis management which some years later was included in the framework of EU. In 1998 EU agreed on a European Security and Defence Policy.
The cooperation with Nato has always had a high priority in EU. In September 2013 the European parliament accepted a resolution about EU:s military structures, where Nato plays an important role. A much closer military and political cooperation is proposed concerning risk management, administration of resources, strategic planning and implementation of military and civil missions.
Today the extent of crisis and wars are worse than ever. What are the roles of EU and Nato in this situation? Continue reading →

Hello Friends, On this side of the Atlantic there’s very little mainstream reporting about NATO, certainly almost nothing about NATO member Turkey serving as a corridor for fighters and arms to reach ISIS in Syria or criticism of U.S. and NATO support for Turkey after the downing of the Russian warplane after being over Turkey at most for 17 seconds, if at all. The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) is deeply troubled by reports that North Korea conducted its fourth nuclear test on January 6. As longstanding opponents of nuclear weapons, we urge the United States and the international community to respond by intensifying diplomatic efforts to address the situation and its underlying causes. This nuclear test underscores the need for the United States and international community to pursue an ongoing, committed diplomatic approach. AFSC has worked with and in North Korea since … Continue reading →
