No to NATO Activities in London

Hundreds of peace activists from across Europe gathered in central London on 30th November to challenge the NATO war machine and discuss alternatives to current policies which are taking the world closer to war. ‘The New World Disorder’ was the counter-summit organised by the No to War – No to NATO network, the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and the Stop the War Coalition. In a packed hall draped with banners from our movement, participants welcomed the veteran writer and broadcaster Tariq Ali, well-known for his pivotal role in the campaign against the Vietnam War. He was joined in the opening plenary by Ludo de Brabander from Vrede vzw in Belgium, Lindsey German from the Stop the War Coalition, UK, and Kristine Karch from the No to War – No to NATO network in Germany. Arielle Denis, the French IPB and anti-nuclear activist, well-known to many in the audience, was in the chair for the session.

Im April und Mai 2020 plant die NATO eines der größten Manöver von Landstreitkräften in Europa seit Ende des Kalten Krieges. Mit insgesamt 37000 Soldatinnen und Soldaten aus 16 NATO-Staaten sowie aus Finnland und Georgien wird eine neue Dimension umweltschädigender militärischer Aktivitäten erreicht. Bis zu 20000 US-GIs mit entsprechendem schwerem Gerät werden über den Atlantik und anschließend quer durch Europa an die russische Grenze transportiert. Am 24.11 fand in Leipzig die erste Aktionskonferenz gegen das geplante NATO Kriegsmanöver Defender 2020 statt. Mit 100 Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmern, vorwiegend aus dem Osten der Republik, war der Saal in der Saal in der St. Trinitatis Kirche überfüllt, Mitwirkende mussten auf dem Flur und auf dem Fußboden sitzen. Lo scorso sabato si è tenuto il contro-vertice “New world (dis)Order” presso la chiesa battista di Bloomsbury solidale con i contenuti pacifisti della giornata. L’evento organizzato dal coordinamento europeo “No to War-No to Nato” col sostegno della Sinistra europea è stato la prima risposta della Londra antimilitarista al vertice Nato ospitato dal governo di Boris Johnson.
