Stolz verkündete die Bundesregierung pünktlich kurz vor den Feierlichkeiten zum 70-jährigen Nato-Jubiläum, für das kommende Jahr seien dem Bündnis erstmals Militärausgaben von über 50 Milliarden Euro gemeldet worden. Der offizielle Haushalt soll laut Kabinettsbeschluss im Jahr 2020 allerdings “nur” 44,9 Milliarden Euro umfassen.

Im April und Mai 2020 plant die NATO mit DEFENDER (Verteidiger!) 2020 eines der größten Manöver von Landstreitkräften in Europa seit Ende des Kalten Krieges.

Mit insgesamt 37 000 Soldatinnen und Soldaten aus 16 NATO-Staaten sowie aus Finnland und Georgien wird eine neue Dimension militärischer Aktivitäten erreicht. With 100 participants, mostly from the East Germany, the hall in the St. Trinitatis church was overcrowded, participants had to sit in the hallway and on the floor.
