Bei ihren „denkwürdigen“ Auftritten auf der Münchner Sicherheitskonferenz Anfang 2014 forderte der damalige Bundespräsident Joachim Gauck, flankiert von Ursula von der Leyen und Frank-Walter Steinmeier, nicht weniger als einen Paradigmenwechsel in der deutschen Außen- und Militärpolitik. Deutschland solle der „Kultur der militärischen Zurückhaltung“ entsagen und sich künftig deutlich öfter (militärisch) auf der Weltbühne positionieren, so die damalige Botschaft, die seither maßgeblich die deutsche sicherheitspolitische Debatte prägt (Wir sind die Guten). Seit mindestens einem Jahrzehnt wird darüber gestritten, ob und wie die Air Base im westpfälzischen Ramstein Teil des Drohnenkriegs der USA ist. Auch nach der Tötung des iranischen Generals Ghassem Soleimani durch einen Drohnenschlag in Bagdad wird über eine Mitwirkung spekuliert.

Army’s 2nd Cavalry gearing up for deployment to Poland

GRAFENWOEHR, Germany — The 2nd Cavalry Regiment will take over NATO’s mission in northeastern Poland this month, in support of the alliance’s effort aimed at deterring Russian aggression.

The Vilseck, Germany-based unit will send one infantry squadron with elements from regimental engineering and support squadrons, 2nd Cavalry spokeswoman Capt. Ellen Brabo said.

Stolz verkündete die Bundesregierung pünktlich kurz vor den Feierlichkeiten zum 70-jährigen Nato-Jubiläum, für das kommende Jahr seien dem Bündnis erstmals Militärausgaben von über 50 Milliarden Euro gemeldet worden. Der offizielle Haushalt soll laut Kabinettsbeschluss im Jahr 2020 allerdings “nur” 44,9 Milliarden Euro umfassen.

Im April und Mai 2020 plant die NATO mit DEFENDER (Verteidiger!) 2020 eines der größten Manöver von Landstreitkräften in Europa seit Ende des Kalten Krieges.

Mit insgesamt 37 000 Soldatinnen und Soldaten aus 16 NATO-Staaten sowie aus Finnland und Georgien wird eine neue Dimension militärischer Aktivitäten erreicht. The first action conference against the planned NATO war-manoeuvre Defender 2020 took place in Leipzig (Germany) on November 24th. With 100 participants, mostly from the East Germany, the hall in the St. Trinitatis church was overcrowded, participants had to sit in the hallway and on the floor. With the “Defender 2020” military exercise, the USA and its European allies will be testing the military infrastructure, command structures and supply routes it has been building up over the past few years in Eastern Europe.
